How to create silver barnevelders? Can I ask this on here :)

Postby nzchick on Mon Jan 25, 2010 6:52 pm

Again we do not have silver barnevelders in NZ. We have the single and double laced in the standard colour (brown/bay). I love the double laced silvers! I know it would be a mamoth task to get really good looking lacing in the new colour but I at least want to have a go at it and see what I can achieve!
How do I do it!!?? I was thinking of crossing SLW roo over barney hen/s. Is this right? then what do I do with F1 progeny? cross back to barney or sibling mating or ???
Any pointers in the right direction would be great!! :jumpy :jumpy :jumpy

SlW X barnevelder hen= F1 silver males ( males will have straw color in hackles) and silver females with rose combs. The males should look like golden duckwing

F1 silver male X barnevelder hen = F2 50% single combed, some silver males ( straw hackles) and some silver females. Pick out a male that has a single comb, silver and has a black breast or a black breast with some lacing on the breast. Do not use a male that has a large amount of silver on his breast. The females in this cross should start looking like double laced birds.

F2 silver, single comb, black breasted male X barnevlder female= F3 some silver males (straw hackle)and silver females. You should get some good females with double lacing that are silver.

Cross an F3 silver male with the F3 silver females = good silver males and females. This cross will also produce straw hackled males.
